Why the Core Values Still Matter in 2025

In 2025, engagement feels more high-stakes than ever. Communities across Australasia are navigating rapid shifts: renewable energy developments reshaping landscapes, soaring housing and infrastructure needs in growing cities, and the urgency of climate adaptation in flood- and fire-prone regions. Add to that the rise of AI-powered analytics and online deliberation platforms—engagement has never been more complex.

So, what keeps us grounded when expectations—and stakes—are soaring?

The IAP2 Core Values.

These aren’t abstract ideals—they’re the practical pillars that communities look for when deciding whether to show up, speak up, or pull away. Here’s how each value matters in 2025:

Right to be Involved

“Those who are affected by a decision have a right to be involved in the decision-making process.”

When communities are impacted—whether by infrastructure, urban planning, or environmental reform—they expect a seat at the table. Engagement isn’t optional; it’s fundamental to legitimacy and fairness.

The Promise of Influence

“The public’s contribution will influence the decision.”

Token consultation doesn’t cut it. Communities expect their insights to count—not just be acknowledged, but to shift outcomes. Without influence, trust erodes fast.

Sustainable, Inclusive Decisions

“Sustainable decisions arise from communicating the needs of all participants, including decision-makers.”

Today’s complex systems need buy-in. When we centre both community concerns and decision-maker realities, we build engagement that endures—and decisions that stick.

Active Inclusion of Impacted Voices

“Public participation seeks out those affected or interested in a decision.”

This isn’t about the loudest voices—it’s proactive outreach. Whether First Nations, multicultural communities, or regional residents, everyone with skin in the game must count.

Co-Design of Participation

“Public participation seeks input on how people participate.”

The ‘how’ matters. Whether it’s digital tools, language access, or meeting structures, communities should help shape the very engagement methods used.

Meaningful Information

“Participants get the information they need to participate in a meaningful way.”

Clarity builds confidence. Whether it’s project data, process limits, or timelines—transparency empowers genuine involvement.

Feedback on Impact

“Public participation communicates how input affected the decision.”

Closing the loop is non-negotiable. Seeing how community voices shaped outcomes—not somewhere later, but in near-enough real time—makes all the difference.

Why This Matters Now

The IAP2 Core Values aren’t just a checklist—they’re survival tools for engagement professionals facing project fatigue, shifting trust, and rising expectations. In a time when institutional credibility is fragile, these values show that engagement is real, responsive, and worth the effort.

That’s why the 2025 Core Values Awards are so important. They spotlight practitioners and projects that don’t just talk values—they live them. From councils embedding First Nations voices in design, to infrastructure projects actively co-designing engagement, to community groups making real impact—these finalists remind us what’s possible when engagement is done courageously and authentically.

✨ Finalists for the 2025 Core Values Awards will be announced soon. Let’s celebrate the tangible change and real voices behind values in action.
