What One Member Learned About Engagement and Governance

Engagement Institute is proud to congratulate Sharyn Cox, recipient of our inaugural Governance Scholarship, on completing the classroom component of the Company Directors’ Course through the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The Governance Scholarship was established to strengthen leadership and governance capability across the engagement profession. It provides one member with the opportunity to undertake the Company Directors’ Course through the Australian Institute of Company Directors or New Zealand Institute of Directors.

Strengthening The Link Between Engagement and Governance

Following completion of the classroom component of the AICD course, Sharyn reflected on the value of the experience and the important connection between engagement and governance practice.

“The opportunity has deepened my understanding of contemporary governance and bolstered my understanding that, with effective facilitation, the wisdom of groups is greater than the sum of the individuals coming together to make decisions.”

Drawing on her background in community engagement, social policy and public sector leadership, Sharyn noted the course challenged her to broaden her perspective from operational and community outcomes to enterprise-wide governance, risk and long-term organisational sustainability.

Why Engagement Matters In The Boardroom

Sharyn also reflected on the role engagement practitioners can play in strengthening governance outcomes:

“Strong governance is strengthened when boards genuinely understand and respond to community voice, lived experience and stakeholder trust.”

Her reflection speaks directly to why the Scholarship was created: to support engagement professionals to bring their insight, strategic capability and community-centred practice into governance spaces.
