What Community Resilience Can Teach Us About Better Engagement

Building resilient communities requires more than effective emergency management, it relies on meaningful engagement, strong relationships and the ability for communities to actively shape the decisions that affect them.

Recent insights from the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) reinforce the important role engagement practitioners play in helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from change.

To support this work, AIDR has released the Community Engagement for Disaster Resilience Handbook Companion Documents—a suite of practical resources designed to help practitioners strengthen community engagement across disaster resilience initiatives.

The companion documents include:

• Practitioner’s Guide: How to Choose Between Community Engagement Approaches – practical guidance to help practitioners select engagement methods that align with community needs, project objectives and decision-making contexts.
• Practitioner’s Guide: Understanding and Addressing Challenges in Community Engagement – strategies for navigating common barriers, managing complexity and supporting more effective engagement processes.
• Program Logic Template – a practical framework to help organisations plan, evaluate and demonstrate the outcomes of their engagement activities.

While developed for disaster resilience, many of the principles explored in these resources are equally relevant across infrastructure, health, local government, planning and other sectors where engagement plays a critical role.

These practical tools complement findings highlighted in AIDR’s latest What’s New in Knowledge – July 2026 update, which showcases emerging research into community resilience. The featured studies emphasise the importance of institutional trust, cross-sector collaboration, community capability and locally informed decision-making—principles that underpin effective engagement regardless of the project or policy context.

For engagement practitioners, the message is clear: building resilient communities begins long before a crisis. It starts with creating opportunities for people to participate meaningfully, building trusted relationships and supporting communities to influence the decisions that shape their future.
