Transmission Is Becoming the Real Bottleneck of the Energy Transition

Renewable energy is expanding quickly across Australia and New Zealand. But according to energy planners, the biggest challenge ahead may not be building wind or solar farms — it’s connecting them to the grid.

The Grid Wasn’t Built for Renewables

Australia’s electricity system was designed around large coal generators located near cities. Today’s renewable energy projects are often located hundreds of kilometres away from where electricity is used.

Connecting these projects requires major new transmission lines.

The Australian Energy Market Operator’s Integrated System Plan (ISP) 2024 identifies significant new transmission infrastructure as essential to maintaining reliability while transitioning to a renewable energy system.

Without these grid upgrades, many renewable projects simply cannot connect.

Infrastructure Meets Communities

Transmission projects can span hundreds of kilometres and cross farmland, towns and environmentally sensitive areas. That makes them some of the most visible and contested parts of the energy transition.

The Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner has reported ongoing landholder concerns related to renewable and transmission infrastructure, including consultation quality and property impacts.

Why Engagement Matters

Transmission may be engineering infrastructure — but it is also social infrastructure.

Projects that involve early engagement, transparent communication and fair landholder negotiations are far more likely to succeed.

As the energy transition accelerates, grid expansion is emerging as one of the sector’s biggest engagement challenges.
