New Zealand Moves to Reform Electricity Connection Pricing

New Zealand’s Electricity Authority is progressing reforms designed to make electricity connection pricing more transparent, consistent and better suited to a rapidly changing energy system.

The proposed changes aim to remove barriers to new electricity connections by providing clearer pricing signals and improving the way distribution network costs are allocated. The reforms are expected to support new housing, renewable energy projects, electrification initiatives, electric vehicle infrastructure and other developments requiring access to the electricity network. Public consultation on the proposals is open until 24 August 2026, with new intervention powers already taking effect from 1 August 2026.

For energy engagement practitioners, the reforms highlight an important consideration: regulatory and commercial changes often become community conversations.

As electricity networks evolve to accommodate growing demand and the transition to cleaner energy, stakeholders increasingly expect clear communication about connection processes, infrastructure investment and how costs are shared.
