Indigenous Businesses and Culture: Unlocking Australia’s Clean Energy Opportunity

Industry leaders gathered at The Summit 2025 have flagged a major untapped opportunity: long-term Indigenous participation in Australia’s booming energy transition.

Panels at the event emphasised that Indigenous-owned businesses and cultural custodians are uniquely placed to contribute to large-scale renewable energy projects — not merely as community stakeholders, but as developers, suppliers and partners. The discussion centred on procurement pathways, cultural land-management expertise, and community benefits tailored to Country.

At the same time, a new national framework — the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy 2024‑2030 — sets out the government’s commitment to placing First Nations peoples at the heart of the energy system. The Strategy states: “We need to create a new business-as-usual for the clean energy sector, with Country and Culture at the centre.”

For engagement practitioners, the implications are clear:

• Project-planning must embed Indigenous engagement from day one — not treat it as an add-on.

• Procurement and supplier frameworks should include Indigenous business participation as a core metric.

• Cultural knowledge and Country-based land management can become value drivers, not just consultation obligations.

• Benefit-sharing arrangements must be co-designed with Indigenous partners to create meaningful, lasting outcomes.

In short: the energy sector is shifting. Engagement professionals who understand how to engage Indigenous communities with respect, depth and strategy will lead the next wave of trusted projects.
