Engagement Timeframes Policy: New Guidance and Tools

How much time is enough for meaningful engagement? When project deadlines and competing priorities shape consultation periods, communities and stakeholders may not have sufficient time to understand proposals, consider their options and contribute meaningfully.

Engagement Institute has released a new Engagement Timeframes Policy, providing practical guidance to help organisations and practitioners determine appropriate timeframes for community and stakeholder engagement.

The policy recognises that effective engagement isn’t about applying a one-size-fits-all timeframe. It requires consideration of project complexity, community needs, accessibility, trust, cultural protocols and the level of influence participants can have on decisions.

To support its implementation, the accompanying Engagement Timeframe Guidance Tool helps practitioners assess seven key decision conditions, recommend suitable timeframes and communicate their reasoning to decision-makers.

Together, these resources support more consistent, transparent and defensible engagement planning, helping ensure communities have a fair and meaningful opportunity to participate.
