Bridging the Gap: Skills, Training and Capability for the Energy Transition

Australia’s clean energy boom is accelerating — but so too are concerns that workforce readiness is falling behind. In its report Skilling the Energy Transition, the Clean Energy Council warns that unless workforce and skill shortages are addressed, the path to net-zero will be challenged.

Some key findings:

• As of 2021 the clean energy workforce was around 30,000 people, but will need to scale rapidly to support major generation, transmission, storage and grid upgrade programs.

• The report makes six recommendations including calibrating higher education to industry needs, anticipating future workforce demand, and raising the profile of clean energy careers.

• A recent review suggests Australia will need a 30% increase in clean energy workforce capacity by 2033.

For engagement and adjacent practitioners, this presents both challenge and opportunity:

• Build internal capability: Engagement teams should consider upskilling in technical literacy (e.g., grid, transmission, storage) and understand how community, workforce and if-you-like the project-impact capabilities intersect.

• Recruit differently: The candidate pool for engagement roles may need to reflect dual competence — community/stakeholder skills + energy-sector awareness.

• Leverage capability hubs: Partnerships with training organisations, community colleges and regional training institutions can bridge gaps and build local trust.

• Frame engagement as workforce infrastructure: Engagement itself becomes a capability layer in the energy system — not just boxes to tick.

As the sector evolves, those practitioners who can speak fluently to both engagement and workforce development will be powerful assets.
