The Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) is inviting First Nations people across WA to submit Expressions of Interest to join the Aboriginal Water and Environment Advisory Group (AWEAG). AWEAG provides expert advice to help ensure fair, balanced decisions in water and environmental management, including feedback on strategies, programs, projects and legislation.

About the role of AWEAG
AWEAG is co-chaired by an Aboriginal community member (nominated by group members) and DWER’s Director General, Alistair Jones. The group currently has seven members and is seeking a further seven, with a focus on gender balance and strong regional representation.

Who should consider applying
DWER encourages EOIs from Aboriginal people with experience in conservation, Aboriginal land and sea management, and stakeholder engagement. Successful appointees will contribute to high-impact work, including the National Water Agreement, National Agreement on Closing the Gap – Inland Water Targets, the WA Climate Adaptation Strategy, and the Exmouth Gulf Taskforce.

Key details

This is a significant opportunity to embed Aboriginal knowledge, values and priorities in Western Australia’s environmental and water decision-making.
